You have now received a circular plaster cast which due to reduced mobility can cause swelling and bluish discolarations of the fingers/toes.
Therefore it is important to prevenet swelling by keeping the extremity elevated for about 10-15 minutes above heart level several times during the day and by exercising your fingers/toes frequently.
During the night, your hand/leg should be elevated for example by means of a pillow.
Occasionally, the plaster cast can cause problems due to pressure why it is important that you are aware of paleness or numbness of your fingers/toes.
If in doubt, please consult your GP, the Emergency Department or the Ortopedic Out-patient Department.
The plaster and the padding must not get wet. During bath/shower wrap the cast in a strong plastic bag, wind a tea towel around the edge of the cast and tape the bag securely to the towel.
Instructions for you
Initially you have to use both crutches. Later on it is sufficient to use one crutch on the healthy side.
Remember to remove the sling several times during the day and exercise shoulder, elbow and fingers thoroughly.
